This is a love song, and love means more than one thing.
If you hear it romantically, you’re not misreading it. Play it at your wedding. Play it on your anniversary to the person who’s been beside you through the years that weren’t the good ones. But if the person who comes to mind isn’t a partner at all, that’s just as true. Send it to the friend who sat with you through a heartbreak and didn’t try to talk you out of it.
I wrote it that wide on purpose.
The album version fills a room. This one takes the armor off it: fingerpicked guitar and piano, the guitar out front, and where the original belted, this flips up into a soft falsetto instead, with the cracks left in.
I went deaf later in life. That’s why these recordings are as bare as they are. There’s nowhere to hide in them, which turns out to be the right place for a song like this one.
